ruled by necessity, happening during the opening of solidarity group show, 2013
A gallery has a two-fold need: by vocation, it supplements itself with art works and by necessity, it demands structures for the exhibition of said art works.
In a triangular collaboration between Tom Robinson, gallery-owner, Charlie Thorne, “cabinet-maker/artist” and I, Prima, art student, we reenact in the period of an exhibition, the economy of the art world within the space of art itself.
Each is consigned to his own role, but in a different time setting. I do not wish to provide the gallery with an object to be exhibited but a service that would contribute to the gallery space itself. The activity of making within the context of an exhibition brings to question whether or not it constitutes an act of art. The binary aspect of Charlie’s profession, between labourer and artist gives the activity of building a moveable wall, a standing in both material necessity and artistic endeavor. His activity, occurring during the opening, becomes a nuisance, an interruption of the on-going show, yet the object of his making will serve exhibition purposes. His partnership with Tom in former projects on the gallery space constitutes the ground on which this system of exchange lies: familiarity.
